STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS

The pandemic has caused many homeowners to reconsider their living space and backyard, regardless of where they live. Giving their patio, porch, or deck a makeover is becoming increasingly popular, and with some clever design advice, it may serve as an extension to your kitchen, family room, and lounge area to expand your living space.

When merging the two locations, especially if building an outdoor kitchen, many factors must be considered. This includes plumbing, dedicated gas lines, electrical, heating, environmental factors, and privacy, to name a few.

However, no matter what your plan is for your patio, deck or backyard oasis keep these design tips in mind for a seamless and functional extension of your indoor living space to your outdoor living space.

Using floor to ceiling windows and doors is one of the best ways to incorporate natural light and bring nature into your home. I’m a big fan of today’s floor-to-ceiling alternatives, whether it’s retractable, accordion, or sliding doors as they all allow for maximum natural light to shine in. They’re also adaptable and can be automated. These windows act as an extension to the outside, either by a patio or deck area and are an excellent way to increase living space.

Consistent flooring will also provide a seamless transition across the room, both indoors and out. Porcelain tile is a great option since it is durable and comes in a range of shapes and colours. There are also porcelain tiles that look like hardwood, which are a great choice if you like the look of hardwood but are looking for something more durable. Flooring isn’t cheap so you want to make sure you’re investing right. Heated flooring gives a touch of elegance and relaxation, if you want to splurge.

A seamless transition of space can also be achieved by using identical or complementary design and decor elements, such as tables and chairs, as well as matching throw pillows, rugs, drapes, and blankets, to add continuity.

Also, bring natural elements to your indoor space by incorporating house plants, or a living wall. Plants are excellent for helping purify the air and removing toxins. We recently added a living wall into Frank’s sunroom on a recent episode of Holmes Family Rescue. It looks great, not to mention plants’ calming effects on our stress levels.

A well-lit interior contains a tiered lighting design, which is also something to think about when moving to your outdoor space. City residents, for the most part, spend 90 per cent of their time indoors and do not receive enough natural light. Lighting technology is evolving to be increasingly complex and intelligent, capable of simulating natural light and, in some circumstances, inactivating viruses.

Homeowners are also embracing smart lighting solutions for the interior of their home, and it only makes sense to continue smart lighting options into your outdoor spaces, making the shift between the areas seamless. There are some innovative and customizable lighting solutions for your outdoor space that are very intuitive and can help create any kind of vibe for that perfect outdoor space.

Hanging lights, post lights, and wall lights may be used to create ambience. Stair and walkway task lighting is required to avoid trips and falls. Finally, accent lighting can be utilized to create drama by uplighting and down-lighting in nearby trees and gardens, fences or pergolas.

Seamless transition from your indoor space to your outdoor space can be achieved by also adding a layer of protection or privacy. Shelter can be created by installing a retractable awning, a pergola, or an umbrella, which will allow you to continue enjoying your outdoor space without being interrupted by summer rain or intense sun.

Privacy is also crucial, which can be achieved with draperies, louvred panels, or retractable panels. These solutions allow for the circulation of natural light and fresh air while simultaneously providing privacy and protection from the weather. Keep in mind that you’ll want to protect your furniture and decor as well.

Adding a fire (and heat) element, like a fire pit or fireplace, to your outdoor area can help you stretch your outdoor space deep into the cooler months. Fire pit and fireplace models include portable and permanent hard-lined units. You might also want to consider standing portable heaters, which are available in both electric and gas versions.

Think of your outdoor area as an extension of your inside space when remodelling it, and use these design guidelines for a smooth and seamless transition that will allow you to make the most of all the room your home has to offer.
